And flip ’em, don’t expect no help”

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

W.B. Yeats

I have loved Yeats’ poem titled Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven from the time I read it years ago. The title for this mandala is derived from the last verse which is my most favorite line from this poem.

Feb 2019: Ripple Effect

Standard
“It’s sad that in a world of billions, people can still feel isolated and alone. Sometimes all it takes to brighten up someone’s day is a smile or kind word, or the generous actions of a complete stranger. Small things, the tiny details, these are the things that matter in life — the little glint in the eye, curve of a lip, nod of a head, wave of a hand — such minuscule movements have huge ripple effects.”

The kind of ripple effects a small gesture can generate is so underrated. Every day, we can make a difference in someone’s life by simple acts of compassion, understanding or just noticing an individual. For example, I like the hint of recognition in the eyes of the concierge person who holds the door at the hotel where we have our monthly events. It started with me looking at him while thanking him for holding the door open for me. Then, I started greeting him first. Next, I made sure to smile as I greeted him, and he reciprocated with a smile – a genuine smile instead of a courtesy smile. Now I sometimes ask him how he is and he responds. This small interaction is important to me and I hope it brings positive vibes to him as well.

The reason I started noticing and focusing on these day-to-day interactions is the keynote address by James Kane at one of the conferences organized by the Project Management Institute (PMI) back in 2013. James’s keynote was titled The Loyalty Switch and remains one of my all-time favorite keynotes as it has had the most impact on me and my daily interaction with people.
